The Village of Cockerham
The name Cockerham is thought to be Celtic and means ' A village or homestead by a winding river'. The main occupation in the village is agriculture with distinct diversification into tourism with several caravan parks and holiday cottages available. The village also boasts superb restaurant, public house, farm shop/ice cream outlet,
2 garages, a joiners and undertakers and the parish hall where many functions are held in the large purpose built hall with bar.
Cockerham has many public footpaths which are regularly used by ramblers and locals alike. The village is home to St Michael's Parish Church, commonly known as the 'Church in the field'. According to the history books the Church dates back to 1400, but the present building has been rebuilt and altered in the years that followed. A communal grave can be found in the Church Yard dating back to a terrible plague which raged through the village in 1650. 64 lives were lost.
